We are getting excited about Thursdays Whitewed Directory Vintage wedding showcase at the Swindon Designer Outlet Village. I will be showcasing Bridal Makeup through the eras of 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Last week I shared about the 1920’s and 1930’s eras and this week I am continuing with the 1940’s and 1950’s.
1940’s Theme Art Deco – Black and Gold Gatsby
The Showcase for the 1940’s Vintage era is at 4 pm and it theme is Art Deco using Black and Gold Gatsby style. The 1940’s was a Glamorous sophisticated and elegant era it was all about femininity. The emphasis was more of a natural look. Eyeshadow was limited to nude or natural colours and used sparingly. Brows became thicker and well defined and they set them with vaseline. The upper lash line was highlight with eyeliner that was black and thick and false lashes were used to elongate the eye. The lower lash line was left clean. The foundation was matte and had the flawless appearance. Blush had pink undertones and was placed under the cheek bones. The signature look of the 1940’s was red lipstick. Women were influenced by icons such as Vivien Leigh and Betty Grable. My look for the 1940’s will be pale greys on eyes, contouring was still in fashion and a true red lipstick

1950’s Theme American Diner Red Cherries, Stripes and White Daisies
So lastly the 1950’s. This is for the showcase at 6 pm the theme is American diner, red cherries, stripes and white daisies. Classic and timeless best describes this era. Makeup and fashion was all about femininity. Icons such Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Munro, Doris Day, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor all graced this the 1950’s. Makeup was a must, no woman would be seen without it. Max Factor was the leading makeup brand in shops. Eyeshadow was very popular again in greys, browns, golds and pastel colours. Brows were strong and dark, but towards the late 50’s they became a softer shape. Again it was all about the upper lashes so much so that the upper lash water line was filled in and the flicked eyeliner became a must, in various colour shades. Mascara was only applied to the top lashes and as in the 40’s the bottom lashes were left clean. Foundation was a must and the most popular foundation was Pancake by Max Factor. This was the era that green powder was introduced to reduce redness on the skin. Today with have green concealer to do that job. Blush was used sparingly and applied to the temples and forehead to warm up the skin tone. Lips were lined outside of the lip line and red was the strong colour of choice, although younger women opted for pinks. The colours i have chosen for the bride are a mink for the eyes with black eyeliner with true red lips. For the bridesmaid a gold brown shadow with navy eyeliner and red lips.
